Node.js hosting comparison and cost calculator
Compare Node.js hosting costs for a SaaS, API, backend worker, or website across managed PaaS, virtual machine providers, and self-hosted PaaS tools.
Use it as a Node.js hosting comparison when you need to compare monthly costs across managed Node.js hosting, virtual machines, databases, Redis, and self-hosted PaaS options.
The calculator compares Render, Heroku, DigitalOcean, Linode, Hatchbox, and Coolify so you can see how a small production app changes in price when you add API workers, Postgres, Redis, or extra servers.
This comparison focuses on sites and services with lower requirements. It is useful when you are planning a new project, choosing a first host, or estimating the monthly cost of a small SaaS app before traffic grows.
Hosting providers can also be quite different. Pure PaaS like Render and Heroku have similar models, whereas hosts for virtual machines like Linode and DigitalOcean are more comparable directly. And we also have Hatchbox and Coolify where the costs are dependent on the number of servers/boxes instead of what you run on them. Note that Hatchbox only runs Ruby on Rails, whereas Coolify is more general and can run Node.js, Python, Rails, and other stacks.
Railway seems interesting too. It's similar to a pure PaaS like Render and Heroku. I haven't included it because I haven't spent time to understand the cost model.
Caveat: all the hosting services charge for egress bandwidth, but most if not all of them offer free bandwidth. For example, Render offers at least 100GB free. Bandwidth cost is not included in the comparison below.
Which Node.js hosting option fits?
Render and Heroku are usually easiest when you want managed deploys, managed databases, and fewer server operations. DigitalOcean and Linode are usually cheaper when you are comfortable maintaining virtual machines, firewalls, operating system updates, and deployments yourself.
Hatchbox and Coolify sit between those models. You still pay for servers, but the platform handles more of the app deployment workflow. That can be a good fit when one server runs several small apps, background workers, databases, or staging environments.
For a typical Node.js SaaS with one web frontend, one API service, Postgres, and Redis, start with the managed PaaS columns if setup speed matters most. Compare the virtual machine and self-hosted PaaS columns when monthly cost and server control matter more than outsourcing operations.
Node.js hosting comparison summary
For a small Node.js API, Render and Heroku are usually the fastest to launch because the app, database, deploys, and logs are managed in one place. DigitalOcean and Linode can cost less at the same RAM size, but you take on server setup, security updates, backups, and deployment automation.
Coolify can be a useful middle ground for Node.js hosting when you want a self-hosted PaaS on your own virtual machine. Hatchbox is listed for cost comparison, but it is Rails-focused rather than a general Node.js host. Use the calculator below to compare the monthly price once you include backend instances, Postgres, Redis, and server count.
Render vs Heroku vs DigitalOcean for Node.js
Render and Heroku are the closer comparison when you want a managed Node.js app host: connect a repository, deploy the service, add managed Postgres or Redis, and let the platform handle most runtime operations. Heroku is mature and familiar, while Render is often simpler to price for small modern apps.
DigitalOcean and Linode are usually cheaper at the raw server level, but the monthly price is not the whole cost. You need to include provisioning, deploy automation, firewall rules, OS updates, backups, log collection, SSL certificates, and incident response. For teams that already run servers, that tradeoff can be worth it. For a first SaaS app, managed hosting may save more time than it costs.
What this hosting calculator includes
The calculator estimates monthly infrastructure cost for common small-app pieces: a web frontend, one or more Node.js backend instances, managed Postgres, Redis, virtual machines, and self-hosted PaaS server count. It does not include bandwidth overages, support plans, observability add-ons, backup retention upgrades, or the engineering time needed to operate the stack.
Treat the totals as a planning baseline. Before moving a production app, check the current provider pricing page and confirm the exact RAM, CPU, database storage, region, and backup requirements you need.
